The music of Tony Mooney

For many years, my musical life was largely subsumed by the demands of a high-pressure career and growing family. I spent my early years in Essex as a lead guitarist and songwriter, leading various alt-rock and folk-infused bands. Though my career eventually took priority, the music never truly stopped.

 

However, it took the game-changing world of digital recording to open my eyes to the possibilities; that I didn't need a full band to create; that I had a digital canvas where I could play the guitars and bass, program the drums, and arrange the soundscapes entirely on my own terms and when I had the time.

I consider myself a blues-based guitarist at heart - indebted to the eloquence of Eric Clapton and others - but Richard Thompson is also a massive influence on my guitar playing and songwriting. Much of my musical outlook is deeply shaped by the art-rock of the 1970's and 1980's and the English folk-rock pioneers.

 

You will find threads of Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Roxy Music and Peter Gabriel woven alongside the likes of PJ Harvey, The Blue Nile and Robert Palmer.

 

While I remain a pragmatic realist about my own singing voice, my music is fundamentally about the narrative—using evocative guitar work, cinematic textures, and observational songwriting to explore personal landscapes and the world shifting around us.

The Albums

Across my full discography, the music represents an evolving journey of observational songwriting, sonic experimentation, and personal reflection. These albums bridge decades of ideas—ranging from the raw, alt-rock foundations of my debut, A Little More Light, to the protest of First Do No Harm and the ambience of Novox. While I am a guitarist at heart, my writing deliberately steps outside traditional boundaries. The music frequently shifts between deeply personal states of mind and vivid, travel-inspired narratives—capturing everything from the mist-heavy waters of the Peruvian Amazon to the wild, velvet coastlines of Tasmania and the ancient history of Sicily.

Sonically, the collection showcases how I approach the guitar as a multifaceted instrument. Although I started by using keyboards to provide support to the guitar, I have transitioned to using the electric guitar as a kind of textural orchestra capable of creating immersive ambient moods, as captured on the completely instrumental album Novox. Marked by a pragmatic focus on instrumentation rather than vocal gymnastics, these records are built on evocative guitar work, literary nods, and a commitment to honest, independent songwriting. Whether delivering a sharp take on original blues or crafting a quiet space to unwind, this body of work is an invitation - like my photography output - to follow the line across shifting landscapes and changing times

The Guitars

These are the eight principal instruments behind the music. Each guitar carries its own distinct voice and made a specific contribution to the tracks. From my main workhorse—the Fender Stratocaster—to the beautiful, vintage clarity of the Burns with its Tri-sonic pickups, and the woody warmth of the Gibson 330, these are the essential tools that shaped the sonic landscape of all my albums.
