Torrent Bay, Abel Tasmin, South Island, New Zealand
Torrent Bay sits at the southern end of the great, three day, Abel Tasmin coastal walk. On our last day, the scenery in fading light looked fantastic, so I popped out to take photos of the bay with its small island set on a calm surface as the sun set.

Hokitika Beach, S Island, NZ
Many of the beaches on the west of South Island, New Zealand are repositories for flotsam but Hokitika beach has so much wooden detritus that you can hardly see the sand. With the spray from the sea, the conical wood structures, the glowering clouds and the sheer amount of flotsam, it looks like the aftermath of an ancient battle.

Perito Moreno Glacier, Argentinian Patagonia
The Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the few glaciers in the world that is still growing. Located in the Los Glaciares National Park, almost at the bottom of Argentina, near the Chilean border, it is a part of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Spanning approximately 250 square kilometers, the glacier is renowned for its accessibility, and I was fortunate to get to walk on the glacier itself. The only sound is the creaking and groaning as this massive river of ice decends and the regular cracks of thunder when chunks of ice break off and crash into the waters of Lake Argentino.

Flotsam Tree – Maori Beach, Bruce Bay, South Island, New Zealand
I spotted this tree washed up on a deserted beach, looking like the skeletal remains of some alien life form. I love the elongated perspective of the tree against the variety of textures that surround it; of sand, sea and clouds

Alemania, end of the line, Salta Province, Argentina
Alemanía is a ghost village lying between Salta and the winemaking city of Cafayate. Alemania means Germany in Spanish and was given this name as a tribute to the German workers who worked on the construction of the branch line joining the capital of the province and the Calchaquí Valleys. The line terminated at Alemania and was closed in 1971. Only the old station remains and the tracks now snake into the jungle, bisected by trees and unusable.

Parque Nacional los Cardones, Salta, Argentina
Los Valles Calchaquíes, in the Salta region of Argentina, covers a huge area of lunar landscapes, big skies, proud cacti, enchanting wine vineyards and kaleidoscopic color palettes. Somewher in the middle sits a National Park which its name from the prevalence of large bush formations of cardon grande cactus. It also features fossil remains of extinct animals, as well as dinosaur tracks.

Hokitita Beach, South Island, New Zealand
Many of the beaches on the west of South Island, New Zealand are repositories for flotsam but Hokitika beach has so much wooden detritus that you can hardly see the sand. Many creative souls have used the materials to make artistic sculptures, which populate the beach. I really liked this sculpture and the picture I took, which I have subsequently used as the cover of my eighth album, Mnesemonye’s Gifts.

Aleta De Tiburon, Chilean Patagonia, Chile
Of all the stunning mountain panoromas in the Terre Del Paine, the Aleta De Tiburon (shark’s fin) was the one that left the greatest impression. I’ve never seen a mountain shaped like this. Formed over millennia by the action of several glaciers, and nestled between the surrounding mountain ranges it looks more like an alien pyramid or the secret base of a super-villain from a James Bond movie.

Mount Fuji, viewed from Mount Komagatake, Lake Ashi, Japan
It might be one of the most photographed mountains in the world but I cannot resist adding my contribution to the collection. Mt Fuji is often covered in cloud so I was fortunate to get this shot from the top of Mount Komagatake and the bare trees and vegetation create a kind of nest in the foreground on which the magnificent mountain is perched

Mount Cook, South Island, New Zealand
Mount Cook [Aoraki ] is the highest mountain in New Zealand at 3,724 metres (12,218 feet). It is situated in the Southern Alps, the mountain range that runs the length of the South Island. This photo was taken from the Hooker Track, a very popular route for tourists to get a closer view of the towering mountain
